SurgAI – surgical guidance with AI
SurgAI is an AI assistant for junior emergency doctors at Danish public hospitals. The doctor describes the patient and gets a structured assessment, step-by-step treatment guidance and a finished chart note. SurgAI is decision support and does not replace the supervising specialist's judgement.
The project is led by plastic surgeon Magnus Avnstorp and a team of doctors. I am the developer and have built the app since the first MVP in spring 2026.
What SurgAI does
- Step-by-step consultation: Guided patient assessment with clinical checklists, treatment instructions with tips and pitfalls, and an automatic chart note.
- Red flags and triage: Findings that must not be missed are shown as clear cards, and a banner shows whether the patient can be treated in the emergency department, should be referred or is acute.
- Sources behind the answers: Answers show which guidelines they are based on and clearly flag when they rely on general knowledge.
- Administration for the doctors: The team edits instructions and creates and approves clinical guidelines themselves, without going through a developer.
- Built for daily use: History of earlier consultations, copying the whole consultation as a note, PDF export, dark mode and installation as an app on the phone.
- Shared login: Plast ID gives the same login as PlastSurgeon and JPBRS.
Technology
Next.js and TypeScript with PostgreSQL. The AI agent itself runs on Corti AI, and the clinical guidelines are collected in a knowledge base on a separate MCP server.
